Calero High School Dress Code

Appropriate Dress and Grooming:

The following rules apply to all students while they are on the Calero High School campus at all times and during school-sponsored activities. The appearance of students while at school has a direct impact on behavior and learning.  For this reason, the following standards for student dress have been established according to district policy and


California Education Code:

  1. Students are expected to dress in a manner that is neat and appropriate for school or work.
  2. Students may not wear clothing that disrupts the educational process.
  3. No sagging clothes (baggy pants); pants should be size appropriate and worn at the waist.
  4. No torn / ripped jeans.
  5. No hats/ head covers, headscarves, head rags (i.e. stocking caps, satin-type or hairdo covers, “do-rags”, etc.).
  6. Clothing, jewelry and personal items (backpacks, fanny packs, gym bags, water bottles, etc.) shall be free of writing or pictures. Other items or insignia that are crude, gang-related, vulgar, profane or sexually suggestive, or that bear drug, alcohol or tobacco company advertising, promotions and likenesses, or that advocate racial, ethnic or religious prejudice are strictly prohibited.
  7. Clothing that bear logos, insignia, professional sports teams, letters or colors (NO RED or BLUE) signifying a gang, a crew, violent actions or weapons will not be tolerated. No shades of RED or BLUE including maroon, teal, etc. ** Parents, please do not let your student attend school wearing ANY shade of Red or Blue.  They will be sent home to change.
  8. All tops (shirts and blouses) must cover the top of the shoulder and completely cover the stomach, chest and back.  No bare midriffs.
  9. Shorts and skirts must be size appropriate (arm extended at side, short or skirt bottom reaches finger tips); tight fitting shorts, short shorts and cutoffs are prohibited.
  10. Only the student’s name, written in plain block letters, is permitted on backpacks or other personal items. 
  11. No see-through shirts, blouses; no halter tops, tank tops/tube tops, undershirts, muscle shirts or other tops that expose the midriff.
  12. Shoes must always be worn. No house shoes or slippers.
  13. No under clothing worn as outerwear. No pajamas or sleepwear of any kind. No blankets.
  14. Red or blue shoes, shoes with red or blue accents or shoes with red or blue laces are not allowed.
  15. No sunglasses may be worn inside school buildings or classrooms.
  16. Any jewelry, body art, piercing or extreme hairstyle/color deemed by the school to be dangerous or a distraction to the learning environment is not acceptable (jewelry with spikes, chokers, wristbands or extra large rings).
  17. Students may not wear clothing that reveals the back or midriff, or through which skin and/or an undergarment is visible (bra straps, boxer shorts, underwear of any kind, etc.), or when arms are raised becomes visible.  These include but are not limited to: boxers, sheer tops, mesh tops, overly large openings at the neck or arms, off-the-shoulder tops, spaghetti straps, halter tops, swim tops, tube tops or clothing that exposes the midriff.

Cell Phones and Electronic Devices:

Cell phones are permitted on campus but must be turned off and put away during class time.

Cell phones may only be used during non-instructional time (before school, break, lunch, after school).

This policy includes IPods, other music playing devices or any other non-school sanctioned electronic devices. Calero High School is not responsible for lost, stolen, or confiscated devices, nor will we investigate lost or stolen items. Please keep items of high value at home.  

Violations for electronic devices confiscated by staff members include:

  1. First Violation – Phone is confiscated by a staff member. Students must pick up their confiscated item from the Advisor’s office after school following a discussion about the violation.
  2. Second Violation – Phone is confiscated by a staff member. The electronic device will be held until a parent or guardian is able to pick up the device (after school hours).
  3.    Third Violation – Repeat violations of this policy will be subject to our progressive disciplinary action policy as outlined in Education Code 48900k. Upon the third violation of this policy, the Calero discipline team will determine consequences based upon the criteria found in the Uniform Disciplinary Chart (this includes possible detention and / or parent conference.)

No Tolerance Policy:

All forms of hazing, bullying, harassing or fighting or conspiracies to engage in fighting are strictly prohibited. This includes any “gang” activity such as flashing signs or intimidation postures or large group standoffs. Acts specifically included in the above:

  • Fighting on school grounds, in a school vehicle or at any school sponsored activity
  • Fights initiated at school but taking place elsewhere
  • Fights which affect any pupil in the East Side Union High School District
  • Causing, attempting to cause or threatening to cause physical injury to another person
  • Any student who transmits information between students or groups that causes or tends to cause a fight is guilty of conspiring to fight

Violations of the above policy are subject to disciplinary action in accordance with Education Code.

Bullying is aggressive behavior that involves unwanted, negative actions. Bullying involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time and an imbalance of power or strength. Education Code 48900 allows for a student to be suspended from school or recommended for expulsion for engaging in acts of bullying, including bullying committed by means of electronic acts.

Possession of tobacco, tobacco related products (including E-Cigarettes), drugs or drug paraphernalia, intent to sell or distribute is also prohibited. Alcohol and drug use are strictly prohibited. Violators shall be subject to suspension, or expulsion according to Education Code standards and possible citation when applicable to San Jose Police Department for violation of Penal Code.

Vandalism / Tagging / Graffiti:

It is policy to seek monetary damages from any individual, or the parent or guardian of a minor, in the amount of the damage for any act of vandalism committed or loss caused by that individual. Violators shall be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with Education Code and possible citation when applicable to San Jose Police Department for violation of Penal Code.

Closed Campus Policy and Food Delivery:

Students are not allowed to leave campus during the school day without express permission from a parent/guardian and without first checking out with the attendance office.

Students are not allowed to leave campus during break or lunch to purchase food items or for any other reason. Students who are caught leaving or returning will have their food items confiscated and will be disciplined accordingly by administration.

If a student is tardy to campus with purchased food items in their possession, the items will be confiscated and can be picked up at the end of the school day in the front office.

Students are not allowed to order food to be delivered during the school day. The food items will be confiscated and can be picked up at the end of the school day in the front office.

Only persons listed as a student’s emergency contact in Infinite Campus will be allowed to deliver food to the front office. Food will not be delivered during class time. It is the student’s responsibility to pick up the food delivery during break or lunch.

Student Search and Seizure:

“As necessary to protect the health, safety and welfare of students and staff, school officials may search students, their property and or/district property under their control, and may seize illegal, unsafe, and prohibited items. The Governing Board requires that discretion, good judgment and common sense be exercised in all cases of search and seizure.” (BP5145.12)

Student Attendance Review Board (SARB):

SARB is a truancy reduction program that operates in alliance with the District Attorney’s office. A student with three (3) or more unexcused absences or who is tardy three times for more than thirty minutes in a school year is considered a truant. A student with more than six (6) unexcused period absences or tardies in a school year will be assigned to attend a meeting with a school official.

Failure of the student to improve attendance may result in a referral to the SARB Board, where the student and an accompanying parent/guardian will be informed of consequences. Continued truancy will result in a citation by the District Attorney for the student to attend Juvenile Court, where the judge may impose necessary sanctions on both the student and the parent/guardian.

Absences and Tardies:

Students must attend school every day. If a student is going to absent or tardy from school for any reason, a parent or guardian must call 408-347-7612 and speak to the attendance secretary. A student with excessive unexcused absences will have a meeting with the Advisor. Continued unexcused absences will require a parent meeting and  may result in a visit to SARB at the District Office for truancy.

Students must be in their seat when the tardy bell rings at 8:30 am. Students who continue to be tardy will have a meeting with the Advisor. Further violations will result in a parent meeting.

Students with serious violations in regards to absences, tardies, or both, will be summoned to SARB at the District Office and may face possible legal consequences as determined by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.

These consequences can range from fines, community service and loss of a driver’s license until the age of 21.

Dress Code:

Any student found to be in violation of the dress code will be required to change via the following methods (at the administration’s discretion):

  1. Change into an article of clothing provided by the school.
  2. Change into an article of clothing provided by a parent or guardian.
  3. Finish the remainder of the school day in the office.

A parent of guardian will be notified in each case. Further dress code violations will result in progressive disciplinary action as deemed appropriate by the administration.

Work Permit:

Any student under the age of 18 must have a valid work permit to be employed. In order to qualify, students must have regular attendance and good citizenship. Please be advised that the school does have the authority to revoke any work permit and / or limit the number of hours and days the student is able to work if a student does not maintain proper attendance, academics or their citizenship record.

Process for obtaining a work permit:

  1. Student must find a job FIRST.
  2. Students must request a work permit application in the front office. Students must complete the “For Minor to Complete” section on the application.
  3.  The employer must fill out their section completely.
  4.  Parent / Guardian signatures are required before a work permit can be issued.
  5. The front office will process the paperwork and contact the student when the permit is ready to be picked up.
